County: Winchester City

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A seriously emaciated 1-year-old, brown-and-white mixed beagle was found on on a Winchester resident's lawn and turned in to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter on Featherbed Lane.

The SPCA received a call at around 3 p.m. regarding the female dog, said Director Will Wood.

The dog, which has been given the name Emma by shelter employees, was left on the lawn of a resident on Opequon Avenue.

Emma was in a crate, where it appears she had spent most of her time because she has difficulty walking, Wood said.

SPCA Manager Margo Bach said the dog had been seriously neglected and was taken to a veterinarian for evaluation.

"She weighs nine pounds now, but she should weigh three times that," Wood said.

He said the veterinarian has given the SPCA instructions on how to nurse the dog back to health, but it will be some time before Emma can be adopted.

The SPCA is taking donations to help get Emma healthy. Anyone interested in helping can call 662-8618 or go to the shelter at 115 Featherbed Lane in Winchester.

Anyone who may have information about the dog and her former owners should call the Winchester Police Department at 662-4131.
