Police found 25 cats in the home of a man who committed suicide and set the second floor on fire. On June 9 police were called to a home for a despondent male. When officers arrived the man refused to comply and eventually fired shots inside the home, according to police. It is unclear if shots were fired at the officers.

Police said the man ultimately committed suicide after setting the upstairs of the home on fire.

After extinguishing the fire, police located 25 cats in the basement of the home.

All 25 cats were in poor condition and taken to the Dumb Friends League. The cats are on hold while the investigation continues.

The woman who lives in the home with the man was issued a citation for animal cruelty.

Police did not immediately release the identity of the man or the woman.
