A young puppy found in Meridian is recovering after allegedly being tortured. The black lab mix shows signs of being dragged and lit on fire.

Even though veterinarians can't say for certain, they do believe the puppy is the victim of animal cruelty.

"I've seen lots of trauma cases but nothing like this before," said Dr. Dave Schulz, a veterinarian at Vista Animal Hospital.

From the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, this black lab mix puppy shows definite signs of abuse.

Patches of bare skin apparent on his belly and paws, evidence that he was dragged by a vehicle.

But what's worse, he doesn't have any whiskers or eyelashes, indicating that the 14-week-old dog was set on fire.

"His hair all over his body has been singed or burned off. Most likely, I would think a flammable liquid put on him and ignited," said Dr. Schulz.

The puppy was found early on the morning of June 12, in a flowerbed at real estate investment firm, DBSI Group of Companies in Meridian.

His yelping caught the attention of several employees.

"He had wounds from all over his legs, to his paws being torn up. His ears were rather scabbed as well as his tail and belly," said Employee Piper Lester.

"You could see fear in little puppy's eyes. You could see it shaking. It was in a lot of pain," said Walt Mott, one of the company's principal owners.

That pain has diminished a little.

The pup has been given antibiotics and narcotic pain relievers.

But for the most part, the veterinarian will let the dog heal on his own.

"Each day, I would expect him to get better and better, if he's going to pull through," said Dr. Schulz.

Lester added, "He's like a little warrior. I think he's gonna make it. We're all pulling for him here, everyone, everyone."

And if he does survive, he'll have a safe place to call home.

Lester says she'll adopt him, putting an end to his life of misery and abuse.

"I'm sure it'll be spoiled rotten, that's good," said Mott.

If the puppy continues to heal over the next few days, he's expected to survive, but will most likely undergo skin grafts for his wounds.

Employees at DBSI are collecting donations to help pay for the dog's medical treatment, which may reach into the thousands of dollars.

Case Updates

The reward for information about who abused a puppy now named "Rocky" is growing. It's now up to $7500, thanks to a $2500 contribution from an international animal protection group called In Defense of Animals.

Rocky is recovering at Vista Animal Hospital, where veterinarians believe his burns are more severe than first thought. Vets now think about 50% of the puppy's body is burned. He has completely lost about 20% of his skin, and 30% of his body has partial skin loss. He is eating about three to four times as much as a normal puppy, but not gaining a lot of weight. The hospital says his prognosis is still guarded, but Rocky's condition has been relatively stable.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Rocky is alert and beginning to walk again.

A puppy found tortured in Meridian a few days ago is getting National attention because of the heinous nature of the crime. The pup was found abondoned after being burned and dragged.

When employees at DBSI in Meridian came to work this week, they couldn't believe what they found, a 14-week-old black lab mix puppy that had been brutally tortured.

An employee at DBSI detailed the injuries, doused with a lighter fluid of some sort, gasoline maybe, not certain but then lit on fire, and on top of that, some abrasions of it being drug along or pulled some sort. Definitely burns on his paws and through his body.

The puppy has burns on 75 to 85 percent of his little body, and bruises and welts from being dragged. His fur is burned short with his eyelashes and whiskers gone. The crime against the dog now has the attention of the Idaho and National Humane Society, which is offering a five thousand dollar reward for the conviction of the person who did this.

There is a clear connection between animal cruelty and violence to humans, says Susan Clark of the Idaho Humane Society, and so it gives me great concern when everyday were hearing stories about people who are murdered, injured, or attacked in our valley.

In the meantime, the puppy has been adopted. Hes at a veterinarians office recovering and is eating solid foods. He also has a new name, Rocky, and a new lease on life.

I know he definitely has hope, the DBSI employee says, cause with the fur that was on top of his head we were petting it. And after all that, he still had enough energy to wag his tail, even though it was singed. He wagged his tail in hopes of the future, and its going to be positive from here on out.

If anyone has any information about this puppy, or wants to help with the reward, call the Idaho Humane Society.
