A Cape Coral woman could face criminal charges after a puppy died from the 140-degree heat inside her locked car, according to Lee County Animal Services.

The womans Scion was found parked June 7 morning in the middle of Island Circle off College Parkway in Lee County, said Lance Raiche, field operations manager for Animal Services. The tinted windows were rolled up and doors locked.

The seven-to nine-month-old pit bull puppy lay lifeless inside, and an animal control officer broke a window to get it out, Raiche said. The dog was dead.

Investigators tracked down the Cape woman through the motor vehicles department and questioned her. Raiche said he wouldnt release the womans name unless charges were filed by the State Attorneys Office.

The woman initially told police someone had stolen her car, Raiche said. Then she changed her story and said shed been drinking and called someone to pick her up. She couldnt drive her car anymore, Raiche said.

The dog appeared to die from heatstroke, but a necropsy is being done to confirm that.

Then theyll turn over the case to the State Attorneys Office, which Raiche said would decide whether to file animal cruelty charges against the woman.
