Nearly two dozen sick puppies are at the Bangor Humane Society after animal welfare agents took them from several homes in the Bangor area. Authorities say the puppies were being sold through an illegal petshop.

Authorities say Don and Marty Kelley of Glenburn and their family ran the illegal pet shop. On June 2, 2006, police and animal welfare agents searched the Kelley's home and the homes of Mary Hughes and Michael Hughes. They also searched Kelley Car Care on Broadway in Bangor.
Agents took 23 sick puppies, mostly toy breeds along with two adult boxers. They also found hundreds of dollars in cash, meds, food and a computer, which they took as evidence. Authorities say it's likely that hundreds of puppies like the ones seized were sold out of the back of a van in parking lots up and down Broadway in Bangor.

The animals were taken to the Eastern Maine Emergency Clinic and are currently at the Bangor Humane Society where they're bring treated for gastrointestinal diseases including giardia, which can be transmitted to humans. "We're especially concerned about the giardia because it contains a contaigent fctor for people so we're being very carfeul about handling them and exposing our staff to the puppies at this point," says Dr. Gary Winters, a veterinarian at the Bangor Humane Society.

So far, no charges have been filed, right now the state is making an effort to get custody of the dogs so they can be adopted out. A judge will make a decision on that later this month.
