Authorities moved the 16 pit bull dogs they contend were used in dog fighting to another location after an attempted break-in at the Lake County Animal Control Center.

Lake County police responded about 9 a.m. on June 10, 2006 to a report of an attempted burglary at the center, 3011 W. 93rd Ave., according to Lake County Sheriff's Department spokesman Mike Higgins. An Animal Control employee told police someone had tried to gain entry sometime after 5 p.m. on June 9, 2006. An outdoor kennel was damaged in the attempt. The employee also told police the center had received an anonymous tip that individuals involved in a suspected dog-fighting ring were going to try to retrieve the dogs from the center during the weekend.

The 16 dogs were removed May 29, 2006 from a Calumet Township property belonging to Gary firefighter Carlton Davis Jr., whose attorney has denied allegations Davis is involved in dog fighting. Prosecutors had not filed charges as of June 9, 2006. The break-in attempt is under investigation by county detectives.
