Three people are facing charges after police stated they kicked a dog out of a car where it was hit and killed.

Bonnie Lynn Strickland stated the dog was kicked out of the car after it attacked her. Police tell us the pitbull-lab mix was abandoned on Interstate 64 near Gaskins Road.

Strickland described herself as an animal lover as she shows us the gashes on her leg. It happened last weekend while she was riding in the backseat of a car with two fighting dogs. Coco, the Pitbull Labrador mix she's been taking care of, clamped down on her leg. Strickland tells us there was blood everywhere.

She says they pulled off to the side of the interstate and the driver wouldn't allow Coco back in the car. Strickland decided at that point to go to the hospital.

Police got calls from other drivers who saw Coco abandoned on the interstate. By the time officers arrived, the dog had been killed by a car. Police went to the hospital where they charged Strickland with felony animal cruelty and arrested the other two people in the car on misdemeanor cruelty charges.

The dog's remains are being tested for rabies. Strickland remains out of jail on an unsecured bond until her next court appearance in July.

"It's a hard situation to deal with when you have two dogs fighting in the car with you, but the thing you ask them to do is contain them as best you can. What she should have done was call police immediately so we could respond immediately," says Lieutenant Doug Perry of the Henrico Police Department.
