Officers seized more than a dozen animals who were forced to live in deplorable conditions from the trash-littered home of a 61-year-old Gadsden woman. Gadsden Animal Control made the surprising discovery on June 6 when they arrived at the Ridgeway Avenue home.

"There were four dogs outside, three inside, (and) 11 cats in cages," said Glenda Battles of Gadsden Animal Control.

Animal Control issued a cruelty to animals citation to the woman after they discovered 18 animals inside. Many of the animals were forced to live in their own feces with no food or water. Authorities said the water at the residence had been turned off since 2003.

"With the water being cut off, these animals were in real bad shape," said Capt. Jeff Wright of the Gadsden Police.

The animals were covered in fleas, and some had even lost fur. They were taken to the Humane Society for care and treatment. The woman who owned the animals apparently lived alone. She was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

If convicted, the woman could face as much as a $500 fine, or up to 180 days in jail.
