More than 30 fighting birds are in city custody after police raided a home where the owner was allegedly training the birds to fight.
A neighbor reportedly tipped animal control officers to the home located in the southwestern part of the city, and authorities cited the accused cockfighter for two misdemeanors. San Francisco Animal Care & Control is not releasing the person's name.
"We got led to this house by a concerned citizen in our community that was concerned about the welfare of the birds," said Vicky Guldbech of San Francisco Animal Care & Control. "We got 30-plus birds from this residence with all the indicators that they were being trained to fight."
A bird captured on May 31 has had it comb removed because it bleeds profusely if cut during a fight.
"This is our second one in a week," Guldbech said. "We've conquered the dogfighting thing, and this may be the new wave, although we don't know yet."
"Some of the birds we might be able to place. Some of the birds that are very aggressive we might have to euthanize," said San Francisco Animal Care & Control Director Carl Friedman. References« CA State Animal Cruelty Map
