A man and woman suspected of leaving a 6-month-old puppy in a pickup in extreme heat were arrested on June 3 in Palm Desert on suspicion of animal cruelty, authorities said.
Arthur Fernandez, 23, of Hemet, and Jessica Nowlin, 18, of Idyllwild, were taken into custody after police broke into the vehicle to rescue the animal, Riverside County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Terrence Tingle said in a news release. The dog, a pit bull, is expected to survive despite being left there when the outside temperature was 105 degrees, Tingle said.
The truck was parked in the shade with a window rolled down about three inches, but the dog appeared to be in distress when officers arrived, Tingle said. One of the suspects said the dog was left unattended in the truck for about 25 minutes so the two could shop in the mall, Tingle said.
Case UpdatesNew information tonight about a pit bill puppy left inside a hot car. Earlier this week, it was reported that the owners would not be charged. The puppy was left in a truck, parked in the shade. The windows were cracked and the dog had water to drink.
Police arrested the owners, but Animal Control returned the dog to them because it was not hurt.
Now, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department has asked the District Attorney to press felony charges against the owners. | Source: KESQ - June 12, 2006 Update posted on Jun 13, 2006 - 10:41AM |
