An Enid man was charged on June 1 with animal cruelty for shooting a neighbors dog with an air rifle, according to court documents.

Richard Donald Potts, 57, is facing up to a $5,000 fine and/or up to a year in county jail or up to five years in prison on the felony charge.

According to court documents, an Enid police officer responded to a call of animal abuse May 6 in the 1800 block of Navajo about 11:30 p.m. and spoke with the victims owner.

She told Officer Nick John her neighbor, Potts, had been shooting her dog with what she believed to be an air gun, according to court documents.

The owner said Potts was always in his backyard harassing her dog, the affidavit states. She said she was in the backyard earlier in the evening and she heard a noise that sounded like an air gun. She said she never saw the gun but heard a sound.

She also said she had just taken her dog to the veterinarian for sores that she believed were caused by pellets or BBs.

Potts is free on $1,000 bond and was ordered to appear in court again Aug. 1 for a bond appearance.
