A parole search of an Atwater residence failed to turn up the parolee but resulted in a woman and a man going to jail on suspicion of animal cruelty.

Forty-nine-year-old Sally Mae Miller was arrested on suspicion of two counts of animal cruelty, and Hosea Arlyn Wilson, 69, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with the serial number removed and one count of animal cruelty.

Brenda Faye Wolfenbarger, 42, a third resident of the house, was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an illegal syringe, possession of a controlled substance, and an outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Atwater Police Chief Richard Hawthorne said the parole search was conducted at 2326 Linden Ave. around 11:30 a.m. on June 1 by the Merced Multi-Agency Narcotics Task Force.

Hawthorne said the search was the result of complaints of possible drug activity in the house, numerous non-working vehicles in the yard, children being around an unsuitable environment, and the inside of the house residence in a very poor condition.

'Parole agents just wanted to check on the status of the parolee,' the chief said.

During the search, agents reportedly found a dog and a cat in a very poor condition, approximately 13 cats confined to one room, and two dogs in the backyard living in unsanitary conditions, Hawthorne said.

All of the sick and injured animals were taken to a local veterinarian for treatment and the house was condemned by the Merced County Public Health Department.

Miller and Wilson remained in custody Friday in lieu of $5,200 bail each, and Wolfenbarger on $25,000 bail.

The parolee sought in the search was not at the residence at the time, said Atwater police Sgt. Jim Court.

Assisting the task force in the search were county health department, California State Parole, Merced County Child Protection Services, Atwater Police Department Animal Control, Atwater Fire Department, and Merced County Animal Control.
