Two men have been charged with felony aggravated cruelty after police said they brutally attempted to kill their pet pit bull in Naperville.
Police arrested Robert S. ONeill, 44, and Steven R. Jones, 41, both of 2456 Rosehall Lane in Aurora, after responding to a call on the evening of June 3 about suspicious people walking around the area of 91st Street and 248th Avenue with a sledgehammer.
When officers arrived at about 6:20 p.m., they found two men on the outskirts of a wooded area. Police said the men had taken a 2-year-old male pit bull mix into the woods to kill it with the sledgehammer after it had become aggressive.
Officers discovered the dog lying in the wooded area, but still alive.
Our officers called an animal control officer who took the dog to an animal hospital, where it was euthanized, said Lt. Dave Hoffman. It had suffered severe injuries.
Both men were transported to Will County jail, where they remained late Monday in lieu of posting 10 percent of a $20,000 bond each.
Hoffman said this dog had nothing to do with pit bull attacks in Aurora earlier that morning.
Aurora police believe the two dogs responsible for attacking two women Saturday morning have been identified. A responding officer shot and killed one of the dogs after it lunged at the officer. The other dog ran away, and police believe they found it Monday afternoon. It will likely be euthanized.
Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner is convening a task force to update local dog laws in the wake of Saturdays attacks. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
