Hoarding - 35 chihuahuas living in filth
Ellijay, GA (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, May 3, 2006
County: Gilmer

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

14 purebred and mixed Chihuahuas have a good reason to celebrate this year's Cinco de Mayo now that the Atlanta Humane Society has offered the little dogs a safe refuge and promising future. The Chihuahuas were rescued from an Ellijay, Georgia from the home of a hoarder on May 3, 2006 after Ray DeLuca of the Department of Agriculture requested that the Atlanta Humane Society immediately dispatch its experienced rescue staff to rescue approximately 11-to-12 of the 35 Chihuahuas found living amongst garbage and filth.

After talking with a certified Atlanta Humane Society staff member, the resident was convinced to surrender 14 of the animals and agreed to give up 10 more next week. The individual admitted that she was no longer able to provide the proper care for the multiple Chihuahua's living at her residence.

The Atlanta Humane Society safely transferred the animals in an emergency Pet-Aid van to the AHS shelter located at 981 Howell Mill Road where the Chihuahuas were immediately examined by Atlanta Humane Society Veterinarians for any health problems. They were then bathed and spayed/neutered. The Chihuahua's are now available for adoption.

Interested parties can get more information on adopting one of the Chihuahua Mixes by calling the Atlanta Humane Society at 404-875-5331. The AHS adoption fee is $85.00 and includes micro-chipping, spaying/neutering, first set of shots and first veterinarian visit.
