Two puppies left to die after being poisoned are now fully recovered and waiting for loving homes. The 3-month-old female puppies, each one a lab mix with black and white markings, are at the Humane Society's shelter in Carteret County, according to the Carteret County Health Department. Both puppies survived the poisoning that killed two other young dogs. "The two surviving puppies are fully recovered and full of energy," said Jeanette Saunders, Carteret County animal control officer. "All they need now is to be adopted by caring and responsible persons."
The quick action of a law enforcement officer, the animal control office and a local veterinarian is credited with saving the dogs from what is believed to be an intentional poisoning. A sheriff's deputy found the four puppies on May 12, barely alive, on the side of a rural road off N.C. 24 in an area between Hibbs and McCabe roads, the Health Department said. The county animal control office was contacted. Saunders transported the dogs to veterinarian Dr. Walter Westbrook in Newport.
According to the Health Department, Westbrook suspected the dogs had ingested rat poison and administered an antidote that saved the two puppies. An autopsy performed on one of the dead puppies showed evidence consistent with rat poisoning, the news release said. One of the puppies that received the antidote recovered quickly and was moved to the animal shelter in Newport on the same day. The other puppy was in more critical condition and stayed at the veterinary clinic until May 17, when she was well enough to be moved, officials said.
"There is no excuse for this kind of cruelty toward animals," Saunders said. "The person or persons who left these dogs to die had many other options open to them if they didn't want to take care of them any longer." The animal control office has not been able to find out who is responsible for the poisoning. Several people who live on the road where the puppies were found were questioned, but no one claimed the dogs or saw who left them on the roadside, she said.
