Columbia County Animal Care and Control officers confiscated more than 40 cats and kittens from a dilapidated Appling home Wednesday afternoon. Linda Fulmer, the manager of the department, said 42 cats and kittens were seized at about 2 p.m. from a double-wide mobile home owned by Nan King in the 2300 block of County Camp Road in Appling. The department was made aware of the situation by a woman who visited the home to pick up a kitten listed in a classified ad. "That is usually how we find out about these things. We rely on citizens to let us know," said Mrs. Fulmer, adding that most of the cats are wild or are sick with respiratory or eye problems.

Mrs. Fulmer said traps have been set to capture about 20 more cats that ran from the home and were hiding in the woods. The felines are being held in quarantine and evaluated. Sick animals will be euthanized, she said.

Ms. King will be cited on a county ordinance violation for animal neglect, but the exact number of charges is not known because a tally of the animals was incomplete Wednesday evening, Mrs. Fulmer said. Richard Harmon, the county's Building and Commercial Services department director, said he plans to get an order for Ms. King and the two other occupants to vacate the home, which he said is unhealthy, unsanitary and dilapidated. "They are in dire straits anyway," Mr. Harmon said. "From our end, we're more concerned about their health."
