Ardmore police were called to a house on May 22 after neighbors discovered a half-dead dog and a litter of puppies in a backyard. KTEN's Andrea Kurys has details. A woman out looking for her cat yesterday took a look over her neighbors fence, only to discover what appears to be a sad case of animal neglect. Vada Franklin and her daughter found a mother dog, half starved, and 6 of her puppies. The dog's bones were protruding and she was too weak to even stand. There were maggots buried in the puppies' tails, and Franklin says she thinks the owner has been away for days. The women called the property's landlord, who gave them permission to feed and care for the dogs until police arrived to take them to a shelter.
Franklin said, "You should not let an animal...animals should not be treated this way. You see it on TV and you think you'd never see anything like that, but it happens right next door."
Police officials say this case appears to be animal cruelty. That is a felony- which is punishible by fines and jail time. The mother and her pups were taken to Ardmore Animal Care until a judge decides their fate. Right now, there are already more than 280 cats and dogs available for adoption at the shelter.
