A Canadian man is being held in the Otsego County jail after deputies said he beat a dog in the head with a barbell.

According to a news release, 31-year-old Mark W. DaSilva, of Toronto, was charged on May 18 with felony aggravated cruelty to animals. The dog's owner took the animal to a local vet, deputies said. They didn't have information Friday night about who the vet was or what the dog's injuries were. The abuse happened at a residence on county Route 18 in Pittsfield, deputies said.
 
DaSilva was arraigned in Edmeston Town Court and sent to the Otsego County jail on $3,000 bail.
