One man was arrested on May 17 after a women driving by noticed two men allegedly beating a dog. Diane Williams said she saw the incident while driving with her daughter and granddaughter near the intersection of Highway 65 and North Grand Avenue. Williams said she saw the men "kicking it up and beating" the dog. "We told them they couldn't do that and to stop," Williams said. "They said it was none of our business what they did with the dog and they called us white trash." In tears, Williams recounted the alleged persistent beating, which she said ended when the two men threw the dog into a metal shed.

Sgt. John Hall of the Porterville Police Department confirmed that authorities responded shortly after 6 p.m. "We got a report of two suspects kicking a puppy," Hall said. "One suspect was arrested and another fled the area." Animal Control reported to the area as well to pick up the dog. "They came to take protective custody of the dog and make sure the dog was OK," said Hall, who said that depending on the injuries, the man arrested could be charged with an animal cruelty misdemeanor or felony. "I have no idea the extent of the injuries, but it could be either."
Animal Control took pictures of the animal before taking it away.

Williams, who said she performed a citizen's arrest on one of the men, said she has no doubt that if the dog is still alive, it was certainly beaten nearly to death.
