Twenty-one cats were rescued on May 17 from what an animal cruelty investigator calls unfit conditions for animals. Debby Houghton of the Durham Region Humane Society said the organization found the cats in a Coppins Corners residence, living in feces and urine covered cages... the whole situation wasnt acceptable. Ms. Houghton noted it wasnt the first time the Humane Society has dealt with the cat mill operators at the residence, of which she did not release an address. But in the past, she explained the owners have complied with requests. The homeowners were not present when the Humane Society removed the animals and no resistance was encountered, she added.

Ms. Houghton said she doesnt believe (operators) have to be licensed to breed cats. Our concern was the neglect and cruelty of animals clearly in distress. She said there is one person mainly and possibly two individuals responsible for breeding the cats. Although she did not contact the police during the matter, Ms. Houghton said she would possibly be laying charges further into the investigation. She noted the cats have been checked over by a vet, are on medication, but none have died so far as a result of mistreatment.

Detective Constable Rob Moore of Durham Polices north detachment said he had not heard anything regarding the incident as of 10 a.m. Thursday. He said Durham police typically do not become involved in investigations by animal control groups. But we (can) keep the peace when they do their job, said Const. Moore.
