Cockfighting - 150 birds seized Lompoc, CA (US)Incident Date: Thursday, May 18, 2006 County: Santa Barbara
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Ramon Bueno
Authorities say a routine traffic stop led sheriff's deputies to an illegal cockfighting operation in Santa Barbara County. Ramon Bueno was pulled over for speeding Tuesday on Highway 246. Sheriffs Sergeant Erik Raney says Bueno was found in possession of cocaine and was wanted for an outstanding warrant for domestic violence. Raney says officers then learned Bueno was involved in cockfighting at a ranch in Lompoc.
Deputies found 150 birds -- mostly roosters -- in a coop at the ranch. Raney says the birds' combs had been removed and their claws were cut down to allow sharp fighting instruments to be placed on their feet. Deputies also discovered vitamins, medications and jars of hormones that likely were injected into the roosters.
Bueno is being held in the Santa Barbara County jail.
