Ten pit bulls were seized at a house just north of Baton Rouge Wednesday morning. State Police said the animals were being used in dog fights. Agents are now looking for the owner of the animals, Kevin Valentine. Valentine pleaded guilty for dog fighting after a 2004 arrest. Police said he now faces more dog fighting charges along with animal cruelty.

"He's in violation of his probation, and as the probation specifically indicated he was not to possess any animals, especially gaming animals," said Dwight Robinette of Louisiana State Police. "Upon us serving the search warrant today we noticed some of the animals did have facial scarring. The animals have been turned into the care and custody of East Baton Rouge Animal Control."

A tip from neighbors led agents to the house on Granberry, a few miles north of the Metro Airport. Once they arrived agents found plenty of evidence to make a dog fighting arrest, including training equipment, two treadmills and drugs used to stop bleeding and prevent infection after a fight. The bust is the second by State Police in the area in the last week. State law says all dogs seized as part of dog fighting rings must be euthanized.

Case Updates

According to court records, Kevin Valentine pled guilty to one felony count of dog-fighting on September 12, 2007. A second charge of aggravated cruelty to animals was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Valentine was sentenced to 4 years hard labor at the Louisiana Department of Corrections, to be served concurrently with other pending criminal cases.

Kevin Valentine is scheduled to appear in court next on March 7, 2007 at 9:00 a.m.

This is the third time Valentine has faced dog-fighting related animal cruelty charges. He was first arrested in January of 2004 in Hancock County, Mississippi. Less than a year later, he was again arrested for dog-fighting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was convicted in that case on December 5, 2005. His three-year state prison sentence was suspended and he was granted supervised probation for 18 months.

According to court records, conditions of his probation included that he not own, possess, or care for any animal of any kind, not attend any event involving animal fighting of any kind, have no involvement in illegal animal activity by phone, mail, or on-line, obtain a mental health evaluation, and remain arrest-free.

On May 17, 2006, Valentine violated his probation by picking up the present dog-fighting case, also in Baton Rouge. On August 31, 2006, the defendant was found to be in violation of his probation. The original sentence of three years in state prison at hard labor was imposed, and Valentine was remanded into custody to begin serving his sentence.

Valentine's upcoming court appearance on March 7 will be for a motions hearing on the charges resulting from his May 17, 2006 arrest for dog-fighting.

Update posted on Feb 11, 2007 - 3:08PM
A Baton Rouge man accused of breeding pit bulls for illegal dog fights is still at large after Louisiana State Police raided his home.

Kevin Valentine was not home when state police arrived yesterday to search the home. Senior Trooper Dwight Robinette, spokesman for the Gaming Enforcement Division, says authorities entered the property and seized 10 pit bulls and various dogfighting paraphernalia.

Robinette says the dogs had facial scars, a possible indication the animals had been involved in dog fights.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Valentine, who in 2005 pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty. He was initially given three years in prison before the sentence was suspended to 18 months of supervised probation.
