A kangaroo found savagely bashed and left for dead at a popular tourist site in Perth has been put down by a vet. The kangaroo was one of seven western grey kangaroos kept in an enclosure on Heirisson Island, an attraction on the Swan River in central Perth.

The animal was found by a ranger over the weekend with severe injuries to its face and legs, a City of Perth council spokesman said. It is believed the animal was bashed with a glass bottle found at the scene. "The kangaroo was still alive when it was found but it was in a pretty bad way," the spokesman said. The animal was taken to a veterinary hospital where it was subsequently put down, he said.

Introduced by the council as a tourist attraction, the kangaroo colony has been on the island since 1998. The spokesman said the council would review security measures at the enclosure.
"This is the first time there has been such an attack," he said. "It's a one off thing, hopefully."
RSPCA spokeswoman Emma-Jane Morcombe said it was a "sickening" that someone could attack an innocent animal. "We believe it's important that whoever did this does not get away with it," she told AAP. Police are investigating the attack.
