Two roosters are dead and six men have been cited following a May 14, 2006 cockfight in a rural barn just south of Morgan Hill. Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy Serg Palanov said today that the men were cited and released for attending the 11:30 a.m. cockfight, at Armsby Lane and Sycamore Drive. They were: Salvador Garcia, 62; Francisco Chavez, 20; Roberto Quevas, 33; Jeraldo Mota, 52; Martin Medina, 38; and Moctezuma Plancarte, 32.
According to Palanov, an anonymous tipster called authorities to report the cockfight, where roosters, often with blades attached to their feet, are pitted against each other in a contest that often leads to their death. Two roosters died in the fight, he said. Palanov said deputies have responded to cockfights at the same location, at least ``two or three'' times this year. One of the times, he said, there were hundreds of roosters involved. He said typically, spectators come to watch and gamble on the birds for money, guns and drugs. Often, they flee before police arrive. Palanov said the property owner, whom he did not immediately identify, is aware of the illegal cockfighting. ``A citizen told a deputy that they've trying lobbying the owner, but he doesn't care, he just wants the money to pay the rent,'' Palanov said, adding that the owner has never been cited to his knowledge.
