Two people who are accused of smuggling fighting roosters across the border are in jail.

According to Customs and Border Patrol agents, a man and his uncle were found on Thursday in a minivan with eight of the birds. Cockfighting is illegal in California.

Authorities said they gave the birds to officials at the United States Department of Agriculture. All of the birds were euthanized because of the risk of disease.
