A Pflugerville family says someone poisoned their three dogs this week, leaving them to die horrible deaths. The Sass family knows someone used anti-freeze to poison the dogs Wednesday night, killing Sam and Buster before dawn, and leaving Fred dying, convulsing and gasping for air. A veterinarian's test came back positive for ethylene glycol, a main ingredient in sweet-tasting but deadly anti-freeze. "We talked about options, and there didn't seem to be any. They brought him back there and we put him down. I put him down," said Kendra Sass.
The family believes someone threw anti-freeze soaked food over the fence, or passed some under the fence near a pole. They says no one has ever complained about the dogs or their barking. "You don't give a dog antifreeze as a way to euthanize them. That's torture," said Mark Sass. Kendra Sass is haunted by noises she heard May 10 night. She thought the dogs were playing. Now, she believes they were thrashing about as they died. "I wish I'd gotten up, I mean even if just... I don't know. Even though you know there's nothing you could have done, at least you could have... I don't know," she said.
The family put a reward poster up on their fence, but so far the only lead is vague. A neighbor saw a man standing in this area sometime on the night of May 10.
Police and sheriff's deputies say they have not any other reports of dog poisoning in the area. References« TX State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Travis County, TX
