A Keystone Heights man was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty after an investigation that began when a probation officer reported seeing a neglected and injured dog at the man's house. Ronnie Smith, 46, told the investigator on April 7 that the pit bull with a badly injured front paw had been hit by a car. The officer reported the situation to Clay County Animal Control, which visited the home in the 5000 block of county Road 214 the next day. The officer found that dog and two others to be thin, with old scars and sores on their bodies. All three were also infested with fleas.

According to the police report, when the animal control officer returned on April 26, the dogs were still in bad condition and the Smith was arrested.

Officials said the dogs were taken to the Clay County's Animal Control facility in Penny Farms, but the dog with the injured foot had to be put to sleep due to its poor condition.

Smith was on house arrest on possession of cocaine charge from Putnam County. The animal cruelty charge constituted a violation of the terms of his release, so Smith was booked into the Clay County Jail.
