A Richmond man is accused of letting his dog literally rot after serious injuries in a fight with two of his other pets. 8News reporter Rochelle Dean talked with prosecutors. "I couldn't bear to look at the pictures but so long most of what I saw were maggots."

According to the lead prosecutor working the case, 3 dogs owned by Mark Davenport were involved in a fight leaving one of them with puncture marks over his body and 4 gaping wounds. Prosecutors tell 8News that rotweiller laid in this back yard with those injuries for at least a week before Davenport called animal control to help him get his dog from underneath his neighbors porch. But prosecutors tell 8News they didn't find his dog underneath his neighbor's porch. Instead they found the dog in his very own backyard. Prosecutors say animal control could smell that dog from up to 15 feet away. "What they found was horrific for lack of a better word. Open wounds infested with maggots..the dog was in fact dying, in shock, infested and toxic." As a result the dog had to be put to sleep. The other two dogs were removed from the 17th street home that still bears a beware of dog sign.

Davenport faces several charges tonight including neglect and cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
