Sharon Bailey pleaded no contest to leaving 13 dogs without water and food for several days. Bailey will not be allowed to keep animals anymore.

General District Judge Louis Campbell found Bailey guilty of five counts of animal cruelty and ordered her to pay a $361 veterinarian fee. The final sentence will be imposed in July.

When animal control officers responded to a call about a foul order and barking dogs coming from Bailey's home, they didn't find any water or food for the mixed-breed dogs left on her property.

There were 13 dehydrated and malnourished dogs locked inside Bailey's home in Iron Gate, Botetourt County, and also in an outdoor pen.

Lisa Wine animal control officer said the conviction means Bailey cannot keep animals any more. "We have charged her before. We have been dealing with her for years."

Wine reported Bailey was about to move out of the home but would come in periodically to feed the dogs. Officers seized the dogs when Bailey failed to respond to a notice left at her home.

Bailey mentioned she locked four of the dogs in a bedroom because they had not been vaccinated.

After the dogs have received care and have been treated by veterinarians, they will be taken to the SPCA, and placed for adoption.
