Charlotte Jones, 49, is charged with Animal Cruelty in Duct taping her puppy's mouth shut in an attempt to teach it not to bark.
Now, she faces criminal charges of animal cruelty.
It's okay now for 5-and-a-half-month-old Shar Pei puppy , but what her owner did was not okay with humane workers.
"I think she duct taped her mouth so she wouldn't bark," said Laurie Patrick, a kennel manager. "[She] was trying to train her ... she said not to bark that way. I think she was also using like ... CORE Throat, Chloraseptic ... to numb her throat."
That duct tape and Chloraseptic is now police evidence in this case.
"It's true animal cruelty," said Lesli Humphrey, a Tuscarawas County humane officer. "That would be like taking a baby that was crying and putting duct tape over its mouth. You just can't do that."
Urichsville police say that before Wednesday, they had gotten a few phone calls for this house, but mostly for unkept property. And on that property, police found the tape dropped on the messy porch.
The humane officer not only seized the puppy, but her 2 canine housemates, who are now all in a kennel.
The puppy is healthy, but underweight, apparently needing worming and puppy shots. But, ironically, the dog is extremely well behaved.
Jones faces a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $750 fine.
She signed over custody of the dogs who will probably be adopted out after the case is resolved.
