Manuel "Curtis" Gibson, a North Port resident, came home on April 9 to find his 5-year-old son Mason's beagle, Mitsie, and pit bull terrier, Max, missing.

About eight hours later, he found out his 1-year-old beagle, Mitsie, was dead. Charlotte County Animal Control is investigating the incident. Mitsie and Max, a friendly 4-month-old puppy, were found on LaVilla Road in Punta Gorda -- more than 20 miles away from their home off Cranberry Boulevard. Animal Control officials believe both dogs were hit by cars after being dumped. Mitsie was found dead, and Max suffered serious injuries to a back paw where a chunk was torn away.
"It's a mystery how they got there," said Lt. Brian Jones, the assistant director of Animal control.

"It looks like someone transported them. We do sense some foul play."

Gibson is devastated by the cruel act that took away one his son's beloved pets and left the other maimed. He is also facing thousands of dollars of rehabilitative care for Max.

Gibson and his wife, Donita, had to tell little Mason about the dogs. "If you would have ever met them, you would realize that nobody in their right mind would have ever dumped them," he said. The dogs were outside in his back yard when he left for work.

Animal Control officials are seeking information about the incident. The person responsible for the act could face abandonment and cruelty charges, Jones said.
