Angela and Timmie Jenkins, both of 610 Crossroads Store Road, were officially charged with 36 counts of animal cruelty after more than 30 dogs were discovered inside her home on January 14, 2004.
A Department of Family and Children Services worker went to the home to investigate the well-being of Jenkins' two sons when the mess was found. Timmie Jenkins was arrested after he got into an argument with that worker and a Sheriff's Deputy. Investigators say the couple was illegally breeding dogs, ranging from Pekinese to Labradors. At least 30 were inside the small home when the DFACS worker was there. Witnesses told WALB that the home was filthy and littered with animal droppings.
According to the Department of Agriculture, the couple was already wanted in Worth County but moved before police could locate them. They had been ordered to quarantine the dogs that had mange, eye infections and bloody paws, among other illnesses. The majority of the animals are being cared for at the Albany Humane Society since there was not enough room in the Crisp facility. Several more are being treated by a Cordele veterinarian. One was found dead. An autopsy is being performed on that dog and its outcome will determine whether felony animal cruelty charges will be sought against the couple. Child cruelty charges are also pending results of medical tests on the children. For now, the 10 and 12-year-old boys are in custody of DFACS. Angela Jenkins is being held in the Crisp County Jail, already charged with an outstanding traffic warrant. Timmie Jenkins was released but Sheriff Haralson expects to have him back in custody soon.
