Nebo, NC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Aug 31, 2005
County: McDowell

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Eddie Childers

The Nebo man authorities call an animal "hoarder" received a probationary sentence in court earlier this month, but a judge placed some restrictions on his pet ownership.

Eddie Childers, whose age was unavailable but is reportedly in his late 30s, pleaded guilty in McDowell County District Court to one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Prosecutors dismissed 20 additional animal cruelty charges.

Judge Thomas Davis handed him a 45-day suspended sentence and placed him on unsupervised probation for 18 months. Childers was ordered to pay court costs and restitution of $1,000. The judge also ordered that he not own more than five dogs or cats.

In September, McDowell County Animal Control officers confiscated dozens of dogs, cats and chickens from Childers' Walker Road residence. Many of the animals were sick and malnourished.

Authorities stated that Childers collects animals he sees on the side of the road and takes them home but doesn't have the resources to care for all of them.

Officers said they have removed 50 to 60 other dogs and five horses from Childers' property over the past 2 years.
