An animal-abuse investigation was launched on May 1 after about 300 animals, birds and reptiles, some of them dead, were discovered at a home near 45th and Northern avenues, police said.

A 62-year-old woman is the target of the investigation, said Officer Mike Pea, a Glendale police spokesman.

Officers went to her home in the 4500 block of West Harmont Drive after neighbors complained of foul odors coming from the property, he said.

The discovery included about 200 exotic birds, such as macaws, cockatoos and game hens, as well as dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, pot-bellied pigs, snakes and lizards, authorities said.

Pea said some had adequate food and water, but others were dead or obviously distressed.

A number of government and private animal agencies assisted in rescue operations, said Angela Stringfellow, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society.
