Injured cat abandoned in apartment
Syracuse, NY (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Apr 17, 2006
County: Onondaga

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

An injured female cat abandoned in an apartment after its owner moved out will undergo extensive orthopedic surgery on April 20.

Diane Blais, who recently purchased a four-unit apartment building at 1621 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, discovered the young calico cat when she went to clean the apartment in early April.

The cat was hobbling, favoring its left rear leg and was so infested with mites her ears were infected and bleeding, Blais said.

She began feeding the animal and leaving water, thinking the owner may return for it, but after nearly two weeks, Blais decided she needed to take action.

Blais contacted Syracuse police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals cruelty investigators and then she removed the cat from the house on April 17.

She gave it to Elaine Daugard, of Clay, who fosters stray cats until she can find good homes for them. Daugard took the cat to Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital in Clay to evaluate the animal's condition.

X-rays indicated the cat's hip and knee had been so badly rotated she couldn't bear weight on that leg, said Tricia Milczarek, a veterinary assistant at the animal hospital. The cat had either been abused or hit by a car to cause such severe injuries, she said.

"She was severely underweight and will be on IV fluids, antibiotics and pain injections for a while," Milczarek said.

Although it will be several weeks before the cat is able to walk again, "we're expecting a full recovery," she said.

After the cat heals, she'll be available for adoption.

Medical treatment is expected to exceed $500.

Because the cat has not yet been named, she is being called "CNY E-949."

"She's really a sweet, sweet cat," Milczarek said. "We're hoping she gets a good home soon."
