A man who prosecutors say attacked a woman with a hatchet at her home pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

According to a criminal complaint, Andres F. Martinez, 43, hit the woman in the back of the head with a hatchet following an argument in November 2005 in Manitowoc.

He also swung the hatchet at the woman's 16-year-old son and another child, who both sustained minor injuries while trying to fend off the attack, the complaint said.

The victims were able to flee the home when Martinez was occupied with hitting a pit bull in the head with the hatchet, prosecutors said.

Martinez also faces one charge of recklessly endangering safety, two counts of child abuse and one count each of mistreating animals and bail jumping.

He had pleaded not guilty in December 2005 and was being held in jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.
