A Queens man was arrested April 30 and charged in the beating of a Chihuahua, animal protection officials said.

Wisam Briq, 26, of Astoria, was charged with one count of felony animal cruelty, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.

According to ASPCA, the 7-pound dog, named Cody, had broken ribs and other injuries. The tiny dog reportedly suffered two broken ribs and a fractured pelvis and hip

Briq's girlfriend told officials she suspected he beat the dog because the animal soiled the floor.

"The dog was obviously in pain and the vet suspected the injuries were consistent with having being beaten and called the ASPCA," said Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo. Pentangelo said Cody was also suffering from internal bleeding and there was evidence the canine may have been choked. "We interviewed the dog's owner who lives with the suspect," Pentangelo said. "She told us that she suspects he beat the dog."

If convicted, Briq could face up to two years behind bars.

Pentangelo said the woman signed over the dog to the ASPCA. Cody may be put up for adoption after he recovers.
