Jocko the Chihuahua is still missing. Eight days after he was stolen from Table Mountain Animal Center, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people who took Jocko.

A TMAC volunteer saw two young men squeeze Jocko through a locked kennel and hand him over the fence to two others around 1:15 p.m. on April 9, 2006. All of the suspects fled on bicycles with the dog down the Clear Creek trail, TMAC director of marketing Ben Drotar said.
Jocko is about three years old and has not been neutered. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the kidnapping, has not received any new information in the case, Drotar said.

The Chihuahua came to TMAC as a stray and was held for seven days. Jocko went up for adoption on the same day he was taken. Drotar said. A few people had already expressed interest in Jocko before the kidnapping but are not suspects, Drotar said. "He was going to go to a great home," he said. PETA, an animal-rights organization headquartered in Norfork, Va., regularly gets involved in crimes against animals, said PETA cruelty caseworker Kristin DeJournett. She hopes the perpetrators took the dog because they wanted a cute pet, and not because they wanted to do something terrible to it, she said. "Shelters are supposed to be a place where animals can be safe," DeJournett said.

In response to the theft, TMAC is installing security cameras donated through the sheriff's department that will provide full coverage of the parking lot, the kennels, lobby and dog-walking areas, Drotar said. Visitors will still be allowed to walk through the kennel area unattended. "We just take whatever extra precautions we have to," he said.
