The Polk County Sheriff's Office has charged the manager of an RV park with animal cruelty after he allegedly killed a stray cat.

Residents of the Mouse Mountain RV Trailer Park on Osceola Polk Line Road in Davenport say Darryl Adams beat the cat to death in front of them.

Adams said the cat was terrorizing the neighborhood and he had to get rid of it.

"This cat has been terrorizing people with cats," Adams said. "If you have a cat in your house this cat is trying to get in your house."

The charge against Adams is a misdemeanor and he will be assigned a court date.

The sheriff's office said Adams disposed of the cat's body in a retention pond and it has not been found.

"I feel bad about it," Adams said. "I love animals. I have no tolerance for animals that people just discard animals."

The people who complained about the cat's killing say they're worried Adams will take some kind of action against them or harm their pets. One man, whose dog disappeared, thinks Adams shot the dog.

They also fear they'll be evicted for speaking out.

"If they're afraid of me, move," Adams said.

Case Updates

A Polk County mobile home park manager has been arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty and witness tampering.

Darrell Adams, manager of the Mouse Mountain RV Resort and Mobile Home Park in Davenport, is accused of beating a stray cat with a brick while horrified residents looked on. In an interview for a previous Bay News 9 story Adams admitted to killing the cat. He said it was terrorizing pets in his park.

The Polk County state attorney has charged Adams and park employee Mark Morgan with felony animal cruelty for their alleged roles in the killing.

Some Mouse Mountain residents said Adams' actions have left them living in a climate of fear and intimidation because they spoke to authorities about the incident. Debbie Dunne says her daughter moved out of state because of a threat from Adams.

"He screamed at my daughter the day of the incident, 'You're out of here,'" Dunne said. "'You are going to be kicked out.' And then his wife screamed it also."

Debbie Dunne's husband Ron Dunne also believes Adams sprayed something like acid on his and other family member's cars, causing the paint to peal off.

"It just seems to be too much of a coincidence to me that three cars at one address and another car at another and they all get sprayed," Dunne said.

Residents can't prove Adams vandalized their cars and he hasn't been charged. But another park resident told Bay News 9 off camera that Adams threatened to get him if it was the last thing he ever did.

Adams' attorney sent a letter to some park residents telling them to stop misrepresenting how the cat was killed. Adams would not comment.

Several residents said they purchased Tasers because they are afraid of Adams.

Both Adams and Morgan were released from the Polk County Jail after posting $1,000 bond.
