Dozens of ducks and geese have shown up dead, their necks snapped, at Naraghi Lake, leaving caretakers to wonder who's behind the unnecessary cruelty.

"They are breaking their necks and killing them for fun," said Kathy Crawford, a volunteer who watches out for wildlife at the lake owned by the Naraghi family.

Because the 33 dead birds were found intact and not eaten, Crawford believes the culprits are not predators but people, even though the lake is surrounded by a six-foot fence.

Since the lake was built in 1980, it's been a haven for migratory birds, she said.

Crawford has notified the police, and the state Department of Fish and Game is planning to post signs stating that it is a state and federal crime to kill or harass migratory birds.
