Scott County authorities are investigating possible dog fighting rings in the area.

That's after the remains of three dogs were found in the Mississippi River near LeClaire over several weeks in April. Officials say the dogs had wound marks consistent with dog fighting.

The three dogs -- a yellow Labrador mix, a pit bull and an unknown mixed breed -- were all found near a boat dock.

The dock's owner, Ronald Jones, became suspicious and wondered if someone was dumping them.

Deputies initially thought the dogs may be connected to the theft of pets from the Elvira area in Clinton County, but they say that's not the case.

The sheriff's office has now assigned a deputy to full-time to the investigation.
