Gillespie police this morning are searching for two men accused of dunking a puppy's head in a bowl of vodka and forcing it to drink, nearly killing the dog.

Late April 28, Macoupin County prosecutors charged Ryan Dawson, 21, of Gillespie, and Ronald Arnold, 17, of Wilsonville, with two counts each of aggravated animal cruelty, said Police Chief Robert Hay. Warrants were issued for their arrest, with bail set at $15,000.

The men were at a party on April 21 when they allegedly abused the puppy, an 8-week-old Lab mix named Daisy. The dog became very sick after drinking the vodka, and her owner took her to the home of an off-duty police officer. The officer and a paramedic helped revive the dog by giving it fluids and oxygen.

Daisy is recovering well at an animal shelter, and will be put up for adoption when the criminal case against the men is done, Hay said.
