In what appears to be a case of serial kitten cruelty, six defenseless felines - little more than a month old - were left at a beach by Long Pond on April 20.

Six months ago a half-dozen kittens, roughly twice as old, were abandoned in almost exactly the same spot.

''I'm sure even the person doing this didn't feel good about it,'' said Penny Schiller, Yarmouth's animal control and protection officer. She suspects the kittens are from the same household.

Abandoning an animal is a violation of the state's cruelty to animals law, punishable by up to five years in state prison and a $2,500 fine.

The most recent Long Pond litter was found by tourists who knocked on Joanna Flynn's door on nearby Lyman Lane.

While it's unusual to see a litter abandoned so early in the year, the warm winter could mean an early start to ''kitten season'' - the time when most cats are born, according to Pamela Lough, assistant manager at the facility.

The kittens were taken to Veterinary Associates on Commonwealth Avenue where they were being evaluated. All six appeared to be in good health.

Abandoning an animal is hard to understand, especially because owners have so many other options, Schiller said.

''We have two wonderful animal shelters on Cape Cod,'' she said. The Animal Rescue League in Brewster runs the Cape's second shelter.

The MSPCA has a program for low-income residents who can't afford to spay or neuter their pets, Lough said.

Anyone with questions or information about abandoned cats can contact Schiller's office at 508-394-4422, or the Centerville MSPCA at 508-775-0940.
