In Dublin, there is the added problem of young people buying horses and ponies in the Smithfield market. Tony McGovern of the Dublin SPCA, who is featured in a new Animal Rescue series starting on RTE, said that this month they had three serious cases reported in one week in the Finglas area.

"We were called out to a horse that collapsed in a field in Finglas," he said. "She had to be put down on site - she had a prolapsed womb.
