A dog and cat owned by a local family had to be euthanized this week because of poisoning, the town's animal control officer said. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the poisoning, said Animal Control Officer Lisa Sawyer.

She did not want to identify the owner or the dog and cat because of the pending investigation, but said they lived in the vicinity of McKenny Road and U.S. Route 1. She also would not disclose the type of poison used. "We have another dog missing," she said, describing that animal as a brown and white, curly-haired hound named Lucy who weighs about 15 pounds. Lucy lives in the Schooner Drive area. In the past five months, six dogs have died in the Monson area of Piscataquis County, possibly from poisoning. "We don't know if this is a copycat," Sawyer said.

Sawyer urged residents to keep a close watch on their pets and said that if dogs are chained outside near a road, owners may want to move them or keep them in the home. Sawyer said she has been working with Maine State Police, state animal welfare officials, the Waldo County Sheriff's Department and the town constable. The dog had to be put down by a veterinarian on April 19, 2006 and the cat on April 20, 2006.

Fliers are being circulated around town in hopes of getting information from residents who may have noticed anyone suspicious in the area. Anyone who sees a dog matching Lucy's description or has information about the poisoning of the dog and cat may call Sawyer at 567-3929, the town office at 567-3404, or the sheriff's department at 338-2040.
