Four bulls and three mares were found knee-deep in manure in a Franklin Township couple's barn, and 28 dogs were tied up without food and water.

A 40-count arrest warrant has been issued for a Franklin Township couple in connection with an animal cruelty investigation conducted in March.

Police received a call of possible animal neglect on March 14 at a Pentecost Highway residence, according to a news release issued on April 20 by the Lenawee County Sheriff's Department. An animal control officer found four bulls in a small area in a barn. They were knee-deep in manure as were three mares on the other side of the barn.

The officer checked the property and reported finding 27 dogs tied up with a 6-foot-long chain. The dogs were standing in muddy water 6 to 10 inches deep with no food or drinking water present. Inside a shed was a female dog that was barely alive and chained with a 4-foot-long chain, police said.

This was not the first time police had been called about the animals' living conditions.

We'd been out there before, but nothing (had been) this serious, Sheriff Larry Richardson said. This was just ridiculous.

No one was home at the time. The officer contacted the residents the next day and found some of the dogs had licenses and rabies vaccination certificates. The sick dog was taken to the Lenawee Humane Society.

Bonnie Tancredi, executive director of the Humane Society, said the dog was taken to a veterinarian who found its internal organs were shutting down due to its emaciated state and recommended it be put down.

The animal control officer returned to the residence on March 20, police said, and found that the animals' conditions had not improved. She also found several skeletons of dead cattle and dogs on the property.

Police are not releasing the suspects' names until they are arrested and arraigned. According to the news release, the couple faces 40 charges, including animal cruelty and failure to bury dead animals.
