A rottweiller, puppies, iguanas, frogs, snakes and mice were carried out of a pet store. Some dead, others close to death in various states of dehydration and malnutrition.
Amy Shonting, Humane Society Manager, "It was pretty bad there was some dead animals there were animals close to death...feces it was pretty bad."
Gallatin police and the Humane Society were called to this building on Nashville Pike, the not-yet-open-for- business Critterville pet store. More than 100 animals inside hadn't eaten in days. There had been plenty of food inside, the caged animals just couldn't get to it.
"A rabbit died while we were here we couldn't get it care quick enough nothing but hair and skeleton underneath the hair."
The woman police planned to charge with animal abuse and neglect is the same woman who was found to be under investigation in Portland for similar charges. Then, Leighann Goodnow showed us what this new store was supposed to look like. But police say it turned out to be a crime, even if only a misdemeanor.
Leigh Ann Goodnow was arrested on 11 counts of animal cruelty, one for each dead pet found in her store. But this isn't the first time someone has filed complaints against her.
Just last week, Portland police examined the store she ran there for a year. The place was filthy, covered in feces from the guard dog she left there at night. Goodnow told News 2 she'd done nothing wrong.
"We were just moving, etc."
Not only is Leigh Ann Goodnow accused of abuse, but police said she didn't even have a license to operate her store in Gallatin or Portland.
Case UpdatesAuthorities added more charges of animal cruelty against the pet shop owner after two abandoned turtles were found. Goodenow, age 40, of 101 Keen Road, in Portland, now faces 13 counts of cruelty to animals. She remains free on $16,500 bond. A preliminary hearing will be held in Sumner County General Sessions Court on March 5, 2003. | Update posted on Feb 24, 2003 - 4:10AM |
