An 18-year-old man faces animal cruelty charges after allegedly running over a puppy that had been stolen from the Flathead County Animal Shelter.

Daniel Staggs is in jail facing theft and animal cruelty charges. A 15-year-old girl is also charged in the theft.

A volunteer at the animal shelter said the girl walked out the back door with the black lab puppy and Staggs picked her up in his car.

Officers pursued the vehicle through town and saw Staggs throw the animal out of the car. The puppy was run over and killed.
