Police arrested 19 men following a cockfight in a vacant downtown building early April 16. Fifteen roosters are dead as a result of the outlawed animal fighting and another 15 were rescued by animal control officers.

Officers on routine patrol downtown just before 2 a.m. saw two men holding two cardboard boxes exiting the back of a downtown building. Such boxes are typically used to carry chickens. Suspicious of a potential cockfight in the area, they decided to investigate further.

Once they entered the vacant building at 36 North Main Street they discovered the scene of a cockfight. Officers found a wooden rink about 3 feet high, blood on the floor, leg spurs, dead or badly hurt roosters, two stop watches used to monitor the fights and a buffet table with food, beer and soda. Those attending tried to flee or hid in the vacant building, said police spokesman Sgt. Christopher Corbett.

The vacant building, which faces the downtown Green, was accessed from a fire escape on Phoenix Street. The fight was set up on the second floor of the building. Corbett said the building owner was not aware of the fight. There is a sign advertising the building for rent.

"None of the people there had permission to be there," said Corbett.

Corbett said 15 roosters were either dead or had to be put down by the animal control officials at the scene. Another 15 were taken away by the animal control officers. Corbett said the state Department of Agriculture was notified of the animals.

"They'll be tested for disease," said Corbett.

Corbett said police are investigating the organizers of the fight. All 19 arrested were charged with cruelty to animals and criminal trespass and released on bail Sunday. Of those arrested only two were from Waterbury; the rest were from Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and elsewhere in Connecticut.

Corbett said these are the first arrests related to cockfighting this year. Last May police broke an even bigger cockfight, arresting 36 people and confiscating cash, a gun and drugs.

Cockfights are a common sport in some cultures. They consist of fighting, usually to the death, between specially trained or bred roosters with metal spurs on their legs. Spectators usually gamble on the fights.
