A half-dozen parakeets are still waiting for homes after being surrendered to the MSPCA Metro South Animal Care and Adoption Center, officials said. The birds were among 62 parakeets that were surrendered by one person to the MSPCA facility in Boston last fall, said Scott Giacoppo, an MSPCA spokesman.
"All 62 came in one small box, not even a cage," Giacoppo said. "It was just someone who was breeding them at home. He just continuously allowed them to overbreed." Birds are typically not neutered, Giacoppo said. The parakeets were distributed for adoption at MSPCA centers in Methuen, Brockton and Cape Cod, Giacoppo said. While most have been adopted, the Brockton birds are in need of good homes, he said. "We usually don't get a lot of birds all at once," Giacoppo said. "And people don't think of coming to animal shelters for birds."
